Abelow's practice is in constant flux. From simple-seeming geometric abstraction to comic figuration, monochromatic paintings to works incorporating text; from large gallery exhibitions to shows at the smallest, most provisional project spaces, he's a painter who cares about painting, a human who created an outsized presence online more than a decade ago yet who today positions himself outside of a certain contemporary always-online-ness.
We have a suite of new figures on canvas, along with new drawings. The figures are roughed in, incorporating a commitment to paint and color yet seemingly effortless, and raw. The drawings draw on meme culture, yet there's still his strange handstyle -- they're Abelow works through-and-through, however heavily circulated their source imagery might be.
